Identifying Your Insta Brand and Growing It!


I just wanted to talk a little about how to identify your brand on Instagram. This is so important when trying to grow your account, people will follow accounts that stand out from the crowd. This doesn’t mean you have to be bold and out there, you don’t need to go and re haul your kids wardrobe with bright colours or redecorate your home with rainbows and unicorns, although some do and they're killing it! @liddierowl

It can all be a little daunting in the beginning, Instagram is a huge ocean and you’re only a little fish, but don’t be scared! Everyone starts somewhere and once you’ve found your niche, you’ll grow.


Use this 30 day plan to start your journey to becoming a real life influencer, and be patient, it takes time, stick at it! Rome wasn’t built in a day!


DAYS 1 - 3 WHO ARE YOU?


Use this first 3 days to figure out who you are on Instagram, what do you post about? What type

of audience are you aiming at building? There’s no point trying to be something on Instagram that isn’t sustainable in your real life, you will run out of content FAST. Think about what you do every day, Do you run? Do you bake? Do you have a healthy obsession with kids clothing? Do you struggle with mental health? Do you do yoga? Do you work full time? Are you weaning your baby and have all these amazing recipes? whatever it is that you do, there's an audience out there that will relate to it.

You’re probably thinking, yes Lauren, I love running, but so do 1000 other mums on Instagram so how will that help me be different? Elaborate on it, it doesn’t mean only post photos of you with your trainers on, but show your audience why you run, show them the story behind it, become ‘the running mama’ show the stressful day you’ve had and the feeling of release when you close the front door behind you, the health difference, the weight loss, the morning when you’ve been up all night and the thought of getting those trainers on is making you feel sick but you get up and you get dressed and you push yourself. Mums will relate to this, they'll be fascinated by Your will power and will want to see more of your life, so when you do post a photo of something completely irrelevant to running it still sparks interest from your audience because your fitness audience is now invested in YOU not your running.


DAYS 3-10 MARKET RESEARCH


Spend the next week researching your market, start following accounts that post content that YOU WANT TO POST. Follow accounts that inspire you and engage with it through likes and comments. After a few days your explorer page accurately depicts what you want to see. Use this feature to find someone who has similar content to you but a bigger following. It should be easy to find similar content now that you have told Instagram’s algorithm what interests you. Examine the quality of their posts. What are they doing differently to you? Perhaps they use the same preset on every photo or they post every day at the same time, are they super creative and do fancy edits? Do they do giveaways to increase their following? Whatever they’re doing, make a note of it and use it as a reference for when your account begins to grow.

By the end of this 10 days you should have found your niche and started connecting with other accounts who are similar, you are engaging with their posts and building rapport with your future audience.




DAYS 10-20 HASHTAGS


Now you have a catalogue of accounts for your research, Look at their hashtags and write down the ones they are using. Find similar accounts to theirs using Instagram's ‘suggested’ feature, with a similar following and do the same thing. Collate all of the hashtags and pop them into a document so you can revert back to them whenever you post, you should have a pool of quality, relevant hashtags to pull from, so when you curate your next post you can draw relevant ones from your document with ease. Try to mix them up, you want to avoid using the same hashtags every day (even if larger accounts do it) because Instagram will flag it as spam and will shadow ban you.

Instagram operates on an algorithm that favors quality content, engagement, and non spam practices. With the new updates in place, Insta is continually checking for robotic behaviour and could ban you for posting the same hashtags every day.


DAYS 20-30 FINDING YOUR AUDIENCE


You are now at a point where you have quality content, an array of hashtags to help you get seen and you are confident in your niche. Next you need to find followers with a genuine interest in your content. To do this, you need to look at slightly bigger accounts, but not too big, you also don’t want accounts that are following too many people, start with accounts that are about 5000-15000 followers. Follow all of the people that they are following, not their followers, do this slowly, no more than 200 a day because again, Instagram will flag you as a spam account. You want to keep your followers to following ratio at a reasonable place, but not while you grow. You’ve probably noticed that accounts which have more followers than following are taken more seriously by brands and other influencers. To get to that point is a graft, you need to find people who like the kind of content you’re producing and to do that, you need to show them who you are and what you create by following them!

Remember, this last 10 days is crucial to your engagement, don't slow down your commitment to those accounts you've connected with. Keep commenting and don’t cut corners by leaving crap comments that aren’t related to the post.

Why should someone care about your posts, when you don’t care about theirs? This is the crucial time to create lasting relationships that will provide you with long standing engagement that tells Instagram your content is good and is being noticed.


DAY 30+ Repeat these steps every day on a smaller scale.


By the 30th day, your engagement should be fantastic, but your follower-to-following ratios are going to look bad, this is where you need to go through and unfollow all of the accounts that didn’t follow you back. This is TEDIOUS, but necessary to get your follower count down. Again, don’t unfollow more than 200 a day to avoid that Instagram block.
